I am trying to extract the colon (:) delimited field directly before "USERS" (2nd field from the end) in the log entries below: 14-07-13 12:54:00.096 STATS: maint.47CMri_3.47CMri_3.: 224: UC.v1:7:USERS.
A little linguistics here. In JSON, square brackets [] denote an array of JSON object, whereas curly brackets {} denote a list of key-value pairs. A JSON object can be an array or a list of key-value pairs; a JSON value can also be an array or a list of key-value pairs. Good news - you don't need any regex for this! your base search | eval sig_names=split (sig_names, ",") | stats count by sig_names.
