Sat down with my new LC9 to look her over. That inclued pullig the slide back and engaging the hold. After I was done looking around inside, I pulled the slide back to release the hold and it did not retract. Just now as I sit down to write this, I popped the magazine out, tried it, and the slide retracted back home. What's the theory behind this?

The fix was to take an Xacto knife and scrape the top part of this outline. It probably required a MM or less of material removal. You caould also probably slightly file the thumb lever itself, but it would need to be removed. Hopefully Ruger reads these forums - the problem could easily be fixed by grinding a MM off the bottom of the thumb lever.
