Most spikes dont quite make contact with the floor you are standing on but two of them should. It used to be easy to get out of the core. Just let yourself suffocate to death, and you spawn back at your base. But now that is impossible. You'd have to run outside of the main core before you can suffocate.

The oxygen goes away when you activate the core. I usually dig down from a base, with my rover, to the outer tendrils, run back up to the base and run a tether all the way to the core. Just for funs. You want some oxygen there so you dont have to panic port back to the surface where you can breath.
From the core, there should be two pillars that lead up. Follow them (you might have to tunnel a little.) When you get close to their tops there should be ground around you, but the gravity will be in flux. Sometimes I build a ramp from the side of the pillar to the surrounding terrain.
