Eventually a sprite showed up in compost bin indicating I had compost available. An empty dirt bag and a trowel was all I needed to 'harvest' it. Kuren.

From my understanding, the bin also has to be outside, exposed to the weather. After that, you can use a sack to remove the fertilizer. I actually rarely bother to use the fertilizer though. Also, to my knowledge fruits and veggies (and maybe mushrooms) can compost. Meats and processed foods will just sit in there rotting forever.
