You don’t need a cream. That said, a good cream or soap will make your shaves better. Blade changing can be subjective. Some push blades into the 100s of shaves. Some only use 1 blade per shave. I personally tend to change when I feel the blade isn’t cutting as well which works out to 7 - 15 shaves depending on blade.

It's normal to use the same blade multiple times before switching them out. Some blades actually shave better after a couple of uses as their protective Teflon coating starts to wear away from the edge. I get around 6 shaves out of my Gillette Silver Blues, with shaves 3 and 4 often being the sweet spot.
