I’ve installed it on a 48" x 49" MDF board, but it for a much tighter fit, 45" x 46" should leave you with < 1/2" on all sides. If you want to let the stepper motors “hang” over the edge, you could build it as small as 44.25" x 42.75".Yes you can use the X-axis instead of the Y-axis. Just chose to use the Y-axis because of the way I had my table setup. But either would work the same just have to switch the setup to the X instead of the Y. I have the X-50 woodworker and so far I’ve been really happy with it, machine is super solid. The linear ball bushings and ball screw setup is imo the best setup amongst the hobby machines. Ball screws offer better rigidity, load ratings, accuracy and repeatability vs belts. I’m most interested in the X-35 Woodworker; but possibly the X-50 Woodworker. Using the shipping labels on the boxes for mine the X50 Journeyman X rail shows 60 lbs and the Y rail box shows 45 lbs. This does not include the Z slider plate which was packaged in one of the boxes but I don’t recall which one at this point. Hope that helps.
