Forum Rules. I have a 1985 Mercury 150 Black Max that is overheating as soon as you put the power to it. It will idle at 145 degrees all day but as soon as you raise the RPM's it gets hot and the alarm goes off. It does not cool down after it gets hot. It has a brand new water pump, thermostats and poppet.

Quickest and easy way to tell is look on cylinder head casting as it will have 3-1/8 (2.0L) or 3-3/8 (2.4L) cast into the side of it. The part number for regulator is 88825A 7 and it should have it own harness, if you dont have harness it should be marked on rectifier case. red to red on rectifier and yellow to either yellow stator lead. T.The only 3 things that would do that is. 1. the stop circuit, which you ruled out by disconnecting the black/yellow wire. 2. the stator, which you will go test. 3 The switchboxes, which are not testable. When trying to figure out a no spark on all situation it is a process of elimination. You start with the stop circuit, move on to the stator.

Jun 26, 2012 · OK first put the thermostats back in. The thermostats restrict and control the amount of water around the cylinder head. If you run without thermostats the water is circulating too fast and doesn't allow the cylinder head to run at the proper temperature and doesn't allow the cooling water to take the heat from the engine.
The Mercury factory service manual says 18* at cranking speed for standard 150's and 22* for XR2's. If your module was just an idle stabilizer, it will have no impact on max advance timing keeping it at 17* in the high rpm range.
